San Diego Regional Airport GIS

Ataa Aly discussed the ArcIMS based Infrastructure Database Management Project

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority (SDCRAA) is one of the busiest airports in the US . This presentation discusses the approach that SDCRAA took in implementing an Infrastructure Database Management Project (IDMP), which is a web-based GIS to "serve up" its vast storehouse of technical information to users throughout SDCRAA. Specifically, this presentation outlines the methodology that was used, the significant technologies that were employed and the key issues that need to be addressed when using the web to deploy broad-reaching applications that incorporate spatial data. The presentation also focuses on the different rules the IDMP is playing in responding to the various needs of the Airport departments including engineering, security, real estate…etc. Furthermore, it establishes a baseline of information on the required maintenance process to keep this Airport-wide GIS as a powerful and flexible, yet eminently usable web-based information tool.

Orange County Transportation Authority -
Web Based GIS Project

Yuying Li from AMEC discussed this ArcIMS based project

This case study reviewed the methodology and technology that Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) used to improve their Combined Transportation Funding Programs (CTFP) Call for Projects Initiative. The project involved the development and implementation of a re-engineered database, a Web-based user interface for entering and maintaining project information, and an integrated Internet Map System using ArcIMS to support application submittals by local jurisdictions. The new system also permits project review, ranking, and administration by OCTA staff.

Using CADD in ArcGIS

Crystal Dorn was with us to look at techniques for using CADD data in ArcGIS

This presentation covered various ways to incorporate CADD data into your work with ArcGIS Desktop. We will look at various Geoprocessing tools to aid you in converting CADD data to GIS data and understanding what you are getting.

- ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst
Katja Krivoruchko from the ESRI California Regional Office gave a demonstration of Geostatistical Analyst.

ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst is a statistical extension to ArcGIS Desktop that provides a dynamic environment for creating optimal surfaces from sample data. It also has a wide variety of tools for spatial data exploration, identification of data anomalies, optimum prediction, and evaluation of prediction uncertainty. This session will give a brief introduction to geostatistics, and then focus on the functionality of Geostatistical Analyst and its application in several case studies.

- Otay Valley Regional Park Invasive Species Eradication Using Mobile GIS
Carl Moczydlowsky from HDR discussed one of their projects with Tablet PCs in the field.

The County of San Diego, Department of Parks and Recreation, along with HDR, developed an innovative, Tablet PC based, mobile GIS solution to an invasive species eradication project in the proposed 9000 acre Otay Valley Regional Park. Using a sub-meter Trimble GeoXT GPS and ArcView 9.0 loaded on an HP Tablet tc1100, the field biology teams were able to inventory and edit vegetation datasets on-the-fly and in the field, drastically reducing office digitizing time. For complicated edits that needed to be completed in the office, the field team was able to utilize ESRI's tablet tools for ArcView to “mark-up” the digital maps and store field notes directly in the .mxd file. Furthermore, the navigational benefits of tracking precise GPS locations in respect to the vegetation data and 6” pixel imagery, enabled the biological field teams to “see around” topographical features to complete an accurate and extensive inventory in 4 weeks.

- Using Mobile GIS to Manage the Removal of Dead, Dying, and Diseased Trees
Justin Mank, GIS Analyst from the County of San Diego Department of Planning and Land Use

In the aftermath of the 2003 Wildfires in Southern California, the County of San Diego received a grant to remove dead, dying, and diseased trees that resulted from a multi-year drought and bark beetle infestation. Where paper maps and compasses were used in the past, the County of San Diego opted to use Mobile GIS Technology for the extensive fieldwork involved.

Implementing ArcGIS, ArcPad and the ArcPad Application Builder, Microsoft Access, and Panasonic Toughbook's, a daily process was developed using Geodatabase and SQL scripts to share data among the field staff and to update six field machines daily. The field methods included the field staff locating participating parcels, collecting information gathered by the tree markers, and updating a parcel-based inventory of every tree marked for falling. Mobile GIS has afforded substantial labor cost savings and served as a force multiplier for the field staff.
